Liberal Statement on the 250th Anniversary of the Royal Proclamation

OTTAWA– The Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, made the following statement today on the 250th anniversary of the Royal Proclamation of 1763:

“Today marks the 250th anniversary of the Royal Proclamation, and in this context, it is important to remind ourselves of the respectful, nation-to-nation relationship and serious obligations that stem from this agreement.

Honouring and reinforcing the spirit and intent of this original relationship, while recognizing and implementing the rights that flow from it, is not only the responsibility of elected politicians, but of every Canadian.

Let us all remember our shared duty to achieve a more prosperous and healthy future in partnership with Aboriginal Peoples across Canada.”

Liberal Aboriginal Affairs Critic, Dr. Carolyn Bennett, continued:

“The Royal Proclamation is the roadmap to achieving transformative change and success on important issues: building strong, safe communities; improving education outcomes; strengthening Treaty negotiations and implementation; and collaborating on resource development.

The Liberal Party of Canada will continue to advocate for a renewed, respectful and inclusive process with all Aboriginal communities – in the spirit of the Royal Proclamation – as well as recognition of the inherent and Treaty rights of Aboriginal Peoples in Canada.”
