Alberta announces funding for mentors of children in provincial care
CALGARY - The province has announced funding for a campaign to recruit 8,000 childhood mentors across Alberta.
About $365,000 will go to the program attracting mentors who can give as little as one hour a week to some of the children and youth under provincial care.
While the focus is on all Albertans, there will be a particular focus on people with aboriginal or ethnic backgrounds who can bring their cultural experiences to young people with similar backgrounds.
Human Services Minister Manmeet Bhullar says the role of one positive mentor can be the difference between a life of hope and one of despair.
There are currently about 7,500 children under provincial care in Alberta.
