HEALTH PROMOTION OFFICER – Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) & Child Nutrition
By actively engaging the Aboriginal communities of Hamilton and Brantford in the pursuit of wellness, the goal of the FASD and Child Nutrition Program is to reduce the incidence of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders and positively impact the health of children by improving their nutritional status and to raise awareness of the health and Social issues that are result of FASD and poor child nutrition. It is our vision that alcohol and other addictive substances will eventually be understood to be unhealthy choices for many people, especially for young pregnant women.
As the Health Promotion Officer – FASD & Child Nutrition you will work under the direction of the Executive Director.
Responsibilities
* Organizational/Clerical:
a. Maintain statistical data and contact information; providing reports as required. b. Work jointly with team members to prepare program reports as required. c. Work jointly with team members to oversee and coordinate program administrative procedures, including overseeing budget and finances. d. Create and conduct program evaluations such as questionnaires, interviews and observations.
* Delivery of Health Programs
a. Identify effective approaches/activities for understanding/preventing and promotion of FASD and nutrition information. b. Design and implement health promotion programs/activities around nutrition. c. Design, plan and deliver programs for community groups, such as teen moms, young moms with addiction problems, parenting and teen programs, street youth centres, conducted by means of workshops, support groups, health fairs, presentations etc. d. Meet with Elders and other Aboriginal social service agencies regarding awareness of health issues such as FASD, and education regarding the same focus groups. e. Coordinate and arrange speakers for community partners.
* Advocacy
a. Directing clients of community programs to appropriate services. b. Communicating community requests for programming. c. Meeting with mainstream and Aboriginal community services and agencies to raise awareness of program.
* Perform other duties as may be required by the Executive Director or Supervisor.
Experience
* Proficiency in health program development, design, implementation and evaluation;
*1 to 3 years of related experience of progressive responsibility;
* Experience in community health planning
* Experience working with Aboriginal peoples or experience working with the general public;
* Proficiency in the use of personal computers, word processing and data base software;
* Valid class G driver’s license.
Education
* Post secondary degree / diploma in health, social services, native studies or related field from a recognized university / college (preferably Nutrition, Dietician, Early Childhood Education or Community Service Worker).
