PRIME MINISTER HARPER ANNOUNCES MEETING WITH FIRST NATIONS EARLY IN NEW YEAR
OTTAWA – Prime Minister Stephen Harper today announced that a Crown-First Nations Gathering will take place on January 24, 2012 in the National Capital Region. During the Gathering, the Prime Minister, Minister of Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development John Duncan and other representatives of the Government of Canada will meet with Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo and a delegation of First Nation Chiefs to discuss key priority areas. The announcement was made today following a meeting in Ottawa between Prime Minister Harper and National Chief Atleo.
“Our Government is taking real action to address important and pressing issues in First Nations communities,” said Prime Minister Harper. “I look forward to meeting with First Nations representatives early in the new year to determine how we can work together to further improve the quality of life and long-term economic prosperity of Canada’s Aboriginal peoples.”
The Crown-First Nations Gathering will be an opportunity for the Government and the First Nations to discuss and identify ways for Canada’s Aboriginal peoples to benefit from increased social and economic participation in Canadian society and improved living conditions in First Nations communities.
The opening remarks and plenary closing sessions will be webcast, and interactive breakout sessions will allow First Nations leaders from across the country to participate in real-time using webinar technology.
The Gathering will build on the Canada-First Nations Joint Action Plan that was agreed to by the Government of Canada and the Assembly of First Nations in June 2011. Both the Government of Canada and the Assembly of First Nations committed to advancing a constructive relationship based on the core principles of mutual understanding, respect, ensuring mutually acceptable outcomes and accountability.

OTTAWA – Le Premier ministre Stephen Harper a annoncé aujourd’hui qu’une rencontre de la Couronne et des Premières Nations aura lieu le 24 janvier 2012 dans la région de la capitale nationale. À cette occasion, le Premier ministre, le ministre des Affaires autochtones et du Développement du Nord, John Duncan, et d’autres représentants du gouvernement du Canada, rencontreront le chef national de l’Assemblée des Premières Nations, Shawn A in chut Atleo, ainsi qu’une délégation de chefs des Premières Nations, pour discuter des priorités. L’annonce a été faite aujourd’hui après une réunion, tenue à Ottawa, du Premier ministre Harper et du chef national Atleo.
« Notre gouvernement prend des mesures concrètes pour régler des problèmes importants et urgents qui touchent les communautés des Premières Nations, a déclaré le Premier ministre Harper. J’ai hâte de rencontrer les représentants des Premières Nations, au début de la nouvelle année, pour déterminer comment travailler ensemble afin d’améliorer la qualité de vie et la prospérité économique à long terme des populations autochtones du Canada. »
La rencontre de la Couronne et des Premières Nations donnera une occasion au gouvernement et aux Premières Nations de discuter pour déterminer comment faire profiter les populations autochtones du Canada d’une participation économique et sociale accrue à la société canadienne et de meilleures conditions de vie dans les communautés des Premières Nations.
Les séances plénières d’ouverture et de clôture feront l’objet d’une diffusion Web et des séances interactives en petits groupes permettront aux dirigeants des Premières Nations de partout au Canada de participer en temps réel, grâce à la technologie des webinaires.
Cette rencontre s’inscrit dans le cadre du Plan d’action conjoint Canada-Premières Nations dont ont convenu le gouvernement du Canada et l’Assemblée des Premières Nations au mois de juin 2011. Le gouvernement du Canada et l’Assemblée des Premières Nations sont déterminés à développer une relation fructueuse, reposant sur les principes fondamentaux de la compréhension mutuelle, du respect, de l’obtention de résultats mutuellement acceptables et de la responsabilité.
